An Inch of Space
by ~DreadhawkUpon pained regret did we lock eyes,
My back to Earth and yours to sky.
What twist of fate had us tethered,
Upon these lives in which we're feathered?
What ill intent fooled you so,
That caused you to stoop so low?
My wealth your target - you stole my heart,
You're surely the master of your art.
It was this night of all that I was shaken,
To reclaim that which was gladly taken.
And the nights that followed followed swift,
As we two joined to cross the rift.
Your eyes I recall were as bright as stars,
Softly dimming the sound of cars.
And the blush spread across your face,
We were separated by an inch of space.
I sought you of my own free will.
And in content I love you still.
You were a light to guide me through,
As we shot into the endless blue.
The once unknown but hidden truth,
Revealed to us in our fortunate youth.
We flew together on united wings,
Of them and us and hopes and dreams.
But it wasn't meant to last,
As panic spread blast after blast.
System and science failing in pace,
Death kept at bay by an inch of space.
Sabotage they yelled before they fled,
Floating into an unconscious dread.
Broken hope like broken stars fell from the skies
The day we died.
And I tried to hold you like the days so long ago,
Yet opposite we were so violently thrown.
As we drifted apart the glow fled from your face,
Our hands separated by an inch of space.
